Suryakumar Yadav Returns to Mumbai Squad

India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav has been picked in the Mumbai team for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which is scheduled to start from November 26. The addition of the seasoned campaigner bolsters Mumbai’s title defence as they open their campaign with a match against Railways in Lucknow. Allrounder Shardul Thakur will lead the 17-member group which includes the likes of Shivam Dube, Sarfaraz Khan, Ajinkya Rahane and up-and-coming player Ayush Mhatre.

Suryakumar’s first domestic T20 appearance since his India call-up comes as the team prepares for a five- match T20I series against South Africa beginning December 9. He enjoyed a stellar IPL season for Mumbai Indians earlier this year when he struck 717 runs at an average of 119.50 and with a strike rate of 167.91.but his international form in 2025 has been less significant. In 15 T20I innings this year, he has scored only 184 runs in total at an average of 15.33 and strike rate of 127.77. The domestic tournament will be a good testing ground for him to get back in the rhythm before the hectic international calendar.

Shivam Dube, whose gameplay time in the middle has been restricted over the last few T20Is, will also be keen on game time of value. The allrounder played just six innings over the Asia Cup and the tour of Australia, making 76 runs off 60 deliveries.

Mumbai are the defending champions, winning the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2024–25 defeating Madhya Pradesh in the final by a big margin. With many senior players in the playing XI and a core who will plow their trade for another year, the team have got it covered to repeat a deep run this season round as well.

India, meanwhile have ten T20Is at home (five each against South Africa and New Zealand) as they build to the 2026 T20 World Cup where they will co-host with Sri Lanka.
